Supporting vocational rehabilitation

When Accessable was approached by Alpha Consultants to support a 12-week work placement for one of their clients, we had no hesitation.

As a result of a motor bike accident, Blake’s disability meant he experienced barriers to re-joining the workforce and we welcomed the opportunity to play a small part in Jake’s return to employment.

Working with Blake and a vocational consultant and occupational therapist to find the right placement, Blake joined our workshop equipment refurbishment team. Tapping into his previous experience as a trainee mechanic, he worked on complex manual and power wheelchairs, something he found worthwhile and satisfying.

Blake told us he wanted to prove to himself that he was confident and capable to be able to physically do what is required of a workshop technician. It was heartening to learn that he had achieved what he set out to do.

While it was great to support Blake’s re-entry to the workforce, the positive effect he had on the organisation in supporting the team culture and inclusivity meant Accessable gained just as much (if not more) than Blake did.
